Above: Kitty Boggis Open Day; Diana with Walk on High (by Tinsley Faerie Legend); Barbara Walkinshaw with Walk on Fire (by Future Role); 30 January 2008 - filly foal born by Tinsley Faerie Legend, earliest foal born 2008 at Brendon Hill
|
January 30 saw the arrival of a cheeky bay filly out of Martine's Maid. She was not due until mid-February but decided to put in her appearance early! We are well pleased with her so far, especially as she is the first foal born at Brendon Hill by Tinsley Faerie Legend.
As you can see from the pictures above, we were very kindly asked to Kitty Boggis' Open Day where two Brendon Hill horses will be competing, both owned by Nick and Barbara Walkinshaw - Walk on Fire and Walk on High.
When Horse & Hound recently did a feature on Britain's best loved horses, we were delighted that our late stallion, Ben Faerie had a son and a grandson in the Top Twenty. We felt this was a real boost for British breeding.
April will be a busy month for us with, not only lambing, but also several of our own mares and visiting mares all due to foal. All the brood mares have wintered well so far and, if all goes well, the first show for us will be Devon County when the new filly foal may put in an appearance.
We wish all the Brendon Hill horses showing and eventing this season all the very best success - and don't forget to keep us up to date with your achievements. |

Horse & Hound - published letter February 2008 - great for British Breeding... Ben Faerie Bloodlines
"Sir - I was interested to see in "Britains Best Loved Horses" (14 Feb) that two of the Top Twenty in your survey were direct decendents of my stallion, Ben Faerie. Priceless, who won Badminton and Burghley twice, was his son and Primmore's Pride is out of a Ben Faerie mare - quite a record for a stallion in the eventing world. His four star son, Faere Vision, is still competing twelve years after his sire's death. This must be positive for British breeding."

2007 Stud News |
This summer on the stud proved particularly busy - in fact, a record year for us...
With the new Ben Faerie stallion, Tinsley Faerie Legend, joining us this year, it added even more interest for our mare owners. He has been very well supported in his first season here and furthermore he is extremely fertile, be it by natural covering or chilled semen. We really look forward to seeing his foals next Spring.
All the stallions have been popular which is pleasing now we are able to offer something to suit everyone’s needs. We were forced to restrict Hot Rumour to a realistic number of mares now he is twenty four. He owes us nothing so we do not wish to be greedy and flood him with more mares than he can manage! Nonetheless he got most of his quota in foal.
The foaling went very smoothly with more mares than ever to foal for other people. It is always a worrying time, but satisfying when one sees the look of joy on people’s faces when they see their new ‘baby’. We found that the instalment of a second camera has been invaluable because there always seems to be two mares foaling close together. We have had as many as three foal in one night!
Martine’s Maid had another beautiful colt foal, called Brendonhill Bafta, this time by Future Role. In their only four outings he was second at the Devon County and Royal Cornwall and first at the Bath & West, finishing the season as Champion foal at Dunster.
Cornish Legend surprised us all producing a stunning filly by Its Without Doubt. She had objected to being scanned the previous summer and so we covered her and left it all to nature, bowing to her age of 21. She is confirmed in foal again this year to Its Without Doubt so we will wait and see what happens next Spring!
Mrs Sym has a very strong upstanding colt by Its Without Doubt called Brendonhill Symbolic. In his only outing he won the foal class at Exford Show. These three foals have all been sold to eventing homes and will hopefully fly the flag for us in the future.
Brendonhill Bafta has joined Walk On Fire owned by Nick & Barbara Walkinshaw, who are loyal supporters of our Brendon Hill bloodlines.
Brendonhill Fictitious has joined her full sister Brendonhill Fable with Helen Mathie. It ia always pleasing when buyers return for the same breeding as before.
The Shire mare Nutwell Liberty had a really quality bay filly foal by Future Role. Her first foal a 2 yr old by Its Without Doubt was sold this summer and will hopefully be successfully competing in dressage in the future.
We have a total of ten mares scanned in foal for next season which, apart from the visiting mares, will keep us busy for a few months.
General News
Some years ago we sold a little three year old, called Faere Vision, by Ben Faerie to Jo May, so it was of huge interest when we knew he was entered at Badminton for his first run there. He finished 24th in the dressage but was withdrawn owing to the ground. He went on to Luhmuhlen and finished fourth resulting from which he was third reserve for the World Championship team. He then ran at Burghley where he finished 25th. He has also been selected on the long list for the Beijing Olympics. It was very exciting to see another Ben Faerie advanced horse competing at that level ten years after Ben’s demise. We were thrilled when Jo came back to us and bought a lovely three year old called Brendonhill Scuttlebutt, by Hot Rumour, and we wish her every success with him in the future.
Anne Hosegood’s Whitegates Thingy’s Role, by Future Role has had a very successful season in Riding Horse classes having subsequently qualified for the Horse of the Year show.
Ben’s Affaere had a nice winner when Victoria Plume on Bertie Wooster won the Riding Club Final event.
We were very thrilled when Mary Bromiley, the world renowned Physiotherapist, chose a photograph of Tinsley Faerie Legend with some ewes and lambs, to illustrate the front cover of her latest book. |

STOP PRESS!
The stud was well represented by numerous horses at the Pavo British Eventing Breeding Championships held at Tweseldown. We were delighted to be present to see Pleasure Beacon by Its Without Doubt win a very strong three year old class. This lovely young horse had won and been Champion there as a yearling .

Tinsley Faerie Legend
Brendon Hill is pleased to announce that Tinsley Faerie Legend stands at Brendon Hill Stallions from 2007. Tinsley Faerie Legend, owned by Mrs Julia Kerslake, is by the stud's famous stallion, Ben Faerie, out of a Welton Louis mare whose dam was Elektra Spiritus (Master Spiritus), the fifth leading eventing mare, acquiring no less than 545 points in an illustrious career.

Summer 2006 News |
'This summer has been rushing by with its fair share of highs and lows. We have foaled a larger number of visiting mares than normal and still have several to go. We have also had a very pleasing number of mares visiting the stud.
Of our own mares, Martine’s Maid by Its Without Doubt had a very nice colt by Hot Rumour called Brendonhill Lancelot. He has covered himself in glory, having won the Small Hunter Brood Mare Foal class at the Royal Cornwall and was also second at the Devon County. His dam was placed at both shows too. Hot Rumour produced another lovely colt foal out of Anne Hosegood’s Riding Horse mare Sunley View who won the Devon County on his only outing.
On a sad note we were sorry to lose Chantille Saucy Sal (Polly) a lovely anglo arab Ben Faerie mare who we had high hopes of producing a super foal. Unfortunately when faced with a mal presentation of the type she had foaling, it was impossible to save her.
Another recent bit of news was from Clare Mallender who bought Faere City from us last year. She went out and won a potential sports horse class at a big show in Yorkshire. It has been good to hear of a number of placings with our Brendonhill horses eventing. We do appreciate it when owners keep in touch with us and tell us of their horse’s successes. Unfortunately we are mostly too busy on the stud to be able to go the events ourselves so we relish hearing any news.
The young horses are doing well on the summer grazing with a particularly nice selection of yearlings many of whom sadly we will have to find homes for if they are to realise their full potential.'

Exmoor's Finest - Brendon Hill Stallions on Parade
Guests were treated to a parade of superb stallions and top quality youngstock at the Brendon Hill Stallions Open Day on Sunday. Glorious weather blessed the gathering and provided a delightful backdrop to the sight of the mares and recently born foals cavorting on the summer pasture surrounding the farm house.
The Stud has been in operation for nearly forty years and, while originally breeding horses with the required stamina for the hunting field, also has three Olympic horses to its credit. Priceless competed at Los Angeles, Schiroubles at Barcelona and Sir Toby at Sydney. The success of the Stud, managed by Diana Scott (Joint Master of the Devon & Somerset Staghounds) and her son Michael, is largely due to the legendary stallion, Ben Faerie, who has sired winners of Badminton and Burghley, as well as World and European Champions. Three of the four stallions standing today link directly back to Ben Faerie - and this year's Badminton winner, Pippa Funnell's Primmore's Pride, is from a Ben Faerie mare.
The day started with a well attended fundraising lunch for the Devon and Somerset Staghounds and was followed by the Stallion and Youngstock Parade, after which there was a collection for the Air Ambulance, which raised almost £700. The Air Ambulance provides an extremely valuable service to all hunting and riding people on Exmoor and there is immense gratitude for what they do. All four stallions, Its Without Doubt (by Welton Louis out of Doubtless, by Ben Faerie), Hot Rumour (by Ben Faerie out of Paprika, by Armagnac Monarch), Ben's Affaere (by Ben Faerie out of Regal Lock, by Royal Vulcan) and Future Role (by Rolfe out of Enchanting Kate, out of Enchantment), were on top form and their condition and turnout was a credit to the stud team.
There was an impressive line up of youngstock, including yearlings Brendonhill Hamish, who enjoyed much success at County Level when shown last year; Brendonhill Positive, a superlative bay filly by Its Without Doubt out of Faerie Diadem (by Ben Faerie) - who is certainly one to watch; Brendonhill Torrid, a bay gelding by Hot Rumour out of Morebath Brownie; and William, a chestnut gelding by Future Role out of Martines Maid. Two year olds included Catherine Lacey Smith's Indian Runner, a 3/4 bred bay filly by Hot Rumour, out of Old Speckled Hen; Dunkery Florin, a substantial 3/4 thoroughbred 1/4 shire bay gelding by Ben's Affaere out of Dunkery Frolic, owned by Joanna Webber; Dinka, a bay filly by Its Without Doubt, out of Hendersyde Africa and Spring Role, a bay filly by Future Role out of Certain Springsong. The three and four year olds beautifully demonstrated these strong and elegant bloodlines and the line up included Brendonhill Fable, a chestnut mare by Its Without Doubt, out of Cornish Legend; Somerset, a chestnut gelding by Its Without Doubt; Perfect Partner, a chestnut gelding by Future Role out of Castelano Lady; Sunley Affaere, a bay gelding by Ben's Affaere out of Sunley View; and Little Rumour, a bay gelding by Hot Rumour out of Evita May.
Brendon Hill Stallions is enjoying considerable success in producing consistent performers for eventing, as well as Grand Prix dressage, and many of these youngsters are destined for great things if the achievements of preceding progeny is anything to go by. A number of the horses featured in the parade are currently offered for sale to competition riders who can fulfill their potential. The sales list can be viewed - CLICK HERE |

Press Release from Equinetourism.co.uk |
Brendon Hill Stallions and Equinetourism.co.uk were filmed by ITV West Country in June to promote the effectiveness of the Equinetourism.co.uk website, which has helped the stud maintain a high number of visiting mares to the stallions.
Brendon Hill Stallions has also noticed a substantial increase in business from its own website and the stud has a huge amount to promote. Primmore Hill, the dam of Primmore's Pride, the 2005 Badminton winner, was bred at Brendon Hill Stallions, by Ben Faerie, and other Olympic and world class event horses include Walk on Star, Priceless, Sir Toby, Shiroubles, Doubtless William and Walter.
The stallions standing at stud today - It's Without Doubt, Hot Rumour, Ben's Affaere and Future Role - are continuing a strong line in grand prix dressage horses and eventers. Michael Scott will be showing mares and youngstock at County level this season, starting at Devon County Show on 19 May.
Michael Scott is pictured here with stallion Ben's Affaere, who performed beautifully for the cameras. |

2005 Summer Update... |
Once again this year the stud is having a good number of mares. All the mares listed on the website have now foaled and the foals are happily running about ready for people to see on the Open Day.
Several mares by Mayhill have come to visit Ben's Affaere after the recent success of Primmore's Pride at Badminton. He, of course, was bred out of a Ben Faerie Advanced mare.
We were very pleased with the Devon County Show results. Philadelphia's bay filly foal, Brendonhill Faere City, came second in a very strong class and her dam was a respectable third. Not bad for an old granny! Brendonhill Hamish, after winning here as a foal last year, came fourth in the Small Hunter Yearling class. The judge commented he was a bit too scopey for this class which pleased owner John Bevan, who really wants him for eventing.
Sadly we did not have time to go to the Bath & West Show but made the long journey to the Royal Cornwall. Again a good result withBrendonhill Faere City coming second and Philadelphia third. At least they are a consistant combination. Another interest at Royal Cornwall was Biddy Peck's lovely lightweight show hunter, Above Suspicion, by Its Without Doubt, who came 5th out of 20 in his class.
There are preparations underway at home for the Open Day on June 26th and several good young horse are being returned to the stud to go on view. |
Spring 2005 News |
Although we are still only in March, the first foals have already arrived at Brendon Hill.
Philadelphia produced her third beautiful foal, a bay filly by Ben’s Affaere. She looks as promising as her full brother Brendonhill Hamish and we have high hopes of her future. She will, hopefully, go to the Devon County Show for her first outing.
Coogee Bay has produced her first foal, a filly by Its Without Doubt. This is a sweet and very quality foal who will also be taken on some early outings to the show ring for a little early education.
The third foal, so far is from Mrs Michelmore’s Certain Springsong (by Its Without Doubt) who has had a lovely strong chestnut colt by Ben’s Affaere. The dam was an intermediate event horse before retiring to the paddocks.
|
| 2004 proved the most successful year to date for Brendon Hill Stallions, with record numbers of mares at stud and young horses sold. Having been recognised as producers of top class event horses, we have now expanded successfully into the showing world - winning at County level - and our stallions have produced Grand Prix dressage horses. |

Philadelphia & Brendonhill Hamish
Brendon Hill Stallions had a really successful day at Exford Horse Show on Wednesday 11 August. The Small Hunter brood mare, Philadelphia, won the Local and the Small Hunter Class and her foal, Brendonhill Hamish, by Ben's Affaere, won both his Foal classes and went on to win the Foal Championship and Ben Faerie Cup.
In the Small Hunter Breeding Championship, Philadelphia was Champion and Hamish Reserve Champion, which was quite a feat.
Brendonhill Faerie Folie & Whitegates Thingy's Role
In the Small Hunter two year old class, Brendonhill Faerie Folie, by Its Without Doubt, was second and in the Small Hunter three year old class, Anne Hosegood's Whitegates Thingy's Role, by Future Role, won and went on to take the Supreme Championship of the show. |

Philadelphia & Brendonhill Hamish
There were further successes for Philadelphia, by Doctor Wall, and Brendonhill Hamish, by Ben's Affaere (see Devon County results below for picture) after a visit to The Royal Cornwall Show. Philadelphia won the Small Hunter Breeding Brood Mare class and Hamish was second in the Foal class. These were both strong classes. Philadelphia then went on to win the Small Hunter Breeding Championship. Judge Henrietta Knight commented in the press. "She's eighteen but she is outstanding and has everything you look for in breeding. She's very well proportioned and has lovely manners." |
Bath & West Show - June 2004 |
Coogee Bay
Michael showed his brood mare, Coogee Bay, in the Riding Horse/Hack Brood Mare class and was placed second. This was a promising result with this mare, now in foal to Its Without Doubt.
Thingy's Role
He also showed Anne Hosegood's Riding Horse 3 year old, Thingy's Role, by Future Role, who also achieved second in a very strong class. |
Eventing News - Brendonhill Macbeth |
Event rider, Caroline Prickett, has been flying the flag for Brendon Hill, with recent successes on Brendonhill Macbeth. This young horse, in his first year competing, has won at Amersham & Cleobury Mortimer. He is homebred by Future Role out of Double Trouble, a full sister to Its Without Doubt.
Only this week, Caroline has been back to purchase his 3 year old full brother, Brendonhill Doublet and last autumn, she bought Brendonhill Legend, by Its Without Doubt, out of Cornish Legend, who will hopefully come out next year.

Devon County Show - May 2004 |
The stud had a very successful outing to the Devon County Show recently. The brood mare, Philadelphia, by Dr Wall, was second in the Small Hunter Brood Mare class and her foal, Brendonhill Hamish, won his Foal class. Philadelphia is on loan to Michael from Mrs G Dogson, who was there to witness her mare's success. Brendonhill Hamish has already been sold to an eventing home and his new owner was also there to see his win. This was Hamish's first appearance in the show ring.
Also on the day, Above Suspicion, by Its Without Doubt, won the Local Ridden Hunter class. He was bred by the late Marjorie Kelly out of a hunter mare and is now owned and ridden by Biddy Peck.

| 2004 Update |
Brendon Hill Stallions is pleased that the Ben Faerie bloodlines continue with major success even after the stallion's death in 1997. Last year the winner of Burghley, Primmore's Pride, was his grandson and his son, Walk on Star, ridden by Pippa Funnell, went on to win the team gold and individual bronze medal in the European Championships.
Furthermore, Walk on Star was then voted top British Bred Competition Horse. This was particularly pleasing because his owners, Nick and Barbara Walkinshaw, had sent the horse to Brendon Hill Farm to do some hunting after Pippa felt he was not that confident across country in wet or heavy going. He hunted with the Devon & Somerset Staghounds for two or three months and then went on to win Saumur and Bramham Three Day Event in that same year.
The Walkinshaws have recently bought a three year old, Bramble, from us in the hope that he will be as successful as Walk on Star in the future. (Watch this space!). This young horse is by Future Role out of Faerie Diadem, an advanced Ben Faerie mare and is currently being produced by Pippa Funnell.

|

Dunster Show 2002 |
The stud also had major successes in the show ring last summer with wins at the Devon County, Royal Cornwall, Dunster and Totnes, to name but a few. A foal by Ben's Affaere won at the Midlands In Hand Show and another by Its Without Doubt won the foal Championship at Exford Show.
Its Without Doubt is a British bred stallion who has sired Dressage winners at Grand Prix level, who include Walter out of a shire mare and Sir Toby, an Olympic event horse. This is a very rare and possibly unique feat in British breeding today. His son, Doubtless William, has just completed Badminton in 31st place, which was some feat in the appalling weather conditions.
The stud is pinning its hopes on keeping the monumental success of the Ben Faerie bloodlines in his two sons, Hot Rumour and Ben's Affaere, plus his grandson, Its Without Doubt. There are also four top class Ben Faerie brood mares on the stud who will ensure the continuation of this valuable line.
The stud, established for nearly forty years, is hoping for another season this year to follow on from the previous successes - with perhaps another Olympic horse amongst the youngsters in the field waiting to grow up... |
